Julia Mordvinova Gilje

Persephone

Persephone, also called Kore (“the maiden”), was the daughter of the ancient Greek gods Zeus and Demeter. The myth of her abduction by the underworld god Hades, represents her function as the personification of vegetation, which shoots forth in spring and withdraws into the earth after harvest; hence, she is also associated with spring as well as the fertility of vegetation.

Persephone is one of a number of pictures Julia Mordvinova Gilje has made, with references to myths.
